A SPENCER MANNING MYSTERY, Book 4
Something is amiss at Riverview, one of the largest amusement parks in the country.
In this fourth installment of the entertaining Spencer Manning Mystery series, author Rick Polad focuses on the famous Riverview Amusement Park in Chicago. Set in the early 1980s, Spencer is a likeable, nice-guy P.I in the mold of his namesake from the Robert Parker detective series “Spenser”.
In this tale, a 16-year-old amusement park worker fails to come home from work one day, and Spencer sets out to track him down. It’s great fun to spend a few days at the Riverview Park, but Spencer makes numerous enemies as he attempts to solve a seemingly intractable mystery that seems to grow in complexity by the minute. Missing Boy is a rollercoaster ride of surprises for fans of great mysteries, and a worthy addition to this fine series.

Missing Boy is one of those books that gets my wife upset with me. She doesn't appreciate it when I get so involved in a book that I tend to ignore her. Spencer Manning falls into a great plot that just keeps you reading.
The best one yet! I loved the setting at Riverview and accurate descriptions of the park and Chicago and the Cubs! The sub plots with the secretary and his girlfriend, Rosie, gave a complexity to the story. Weaving in Door County from the last story was great too. I can't wait for #5!
Rick has come up with another tightly woven page turner! Spencer Manning continues to evolve as the personally flawed but professionally brilliant detective surrounded by his colorful regulars, Stosh, Rosie and others, who also continue to develop with each new novel. Rick's writing is engaging, thought-provoking and interesting. I love the way local locations and color are always integral to his plots.

The beloved Riverview Amusement Park in Chicago provides the colorful setting for Rick Polad's mystery novel Missing Boy. The story is set in the early 1980s, the same era as TV's detective series Spenser. The name of P.I Spencer Manning was inspired by that other famous detective. Author Rick Polad had to keep Riverview open longer that its actual lifetime. The park operated from 1904 to 1967. Few would mind giving this delightful attraction a few more years of life.
The problem I find with Rick Polad’s books, is that I buy them when they are first released, read them right away…and then I have to wait…again…for the next one. I almost wish I had not started reading them until years from now, when there were already 10 or so waiting for me. I really enjoy his books. Polad always throws some pearls of wisdom and interesting historical information into his winning mix of humor, crime, romance, mystery and wonderful characters.
I've been hooked on Spencer Manning since the beginning and this book certainly does not disappoint. Another fantastic read from Rick Polad that had me doing a double-take --- did that just happen?? I highly recommend Missing Boy for a captivating and exciting read!
